Currently, Ho Chi Minh City is in the dry season, so fires are difficult to avoid in daily life. Therefore, we need to be aware of and check fire extinguishers, as well as maintain fire prevention and fighting equipment so they can be useful when needed. To ensure the safety of fire protection equipment, we need to keep in mind the following steps:
1. How to Inspect a Fire Extinguisher
Inspection Frequency: Once a month (or as required by fire safety regulations).
Step 1: External Inspection
Inspection seal and label: Ensure the extinguisher is within its validity period.
Cylinder body: Check for dents, leaks, or rust.
Safety pin & tamper seal: Ensure they are intact and not broken or missing.
Hose & discharge nozzle: Make sure they are not clogged or damaged.
Step 2: Check Pressure Gauge
If the extinguisher has a pressure gauge:
Green zone: The extinguisher is in good condition.
Red zone: Needs recharging or servicing.
Shake a dry powder extinguisher: If the powder inside is clumping, shake it firmly to loosen the contents or take it for maintenance.
Step 3: Check Usability
Lift the extinguisher—if it feels lighter than usual, it may have leaked.
If permitted, test a short burst in a safe location to check the discharge pressure.
Note:
Do not store fire extinguishers in high-temperature areas, as they may explode.
Place extinguishers in easily accessible locations.
2. How to Maintain Fire Extinguishers:
Maintenance Frequency: Every 6 months to 1 year, depending on the type of extinguisher.
Dry Powder Extinguishers (MFZ, ABC, BC):
Refill or replace the powder if it clumps.
Check the propellant gas; recharge if pressure is low.
CO₂ Extinguishers:
Weigh the extinguisher periodically; if the gas weight drops by more than 10%, it needs refilling.
Check the discharge hose for blockages.
Water or Foam Extinguishers:
Replace the water or foam if expired.
Ensure the extinguisher is properly sealed to prevent leaks.
Note:
Refill extinguishers only at certified fire safety service providers.
Do not disassemble extinguisher components on your own.
3. How to Maintain Other Fire Safety Equipment:
Fire Alarm Systems
Check batteries, power supply, and alarm sound every 3–6 months.
Clean smoke detectors and heat sensors to prevent dust buildup.
Inspect wiring for any damage or disconnections.
Fire Hose and Sprinkler Systems
Ensure there are no water leaks.
Check that sprinkler heads are not blocked.
Conduct a functional test every 6 months to 1 year.
Smoke Extractors and Emergency Lights
Ensure indicator lights function properly.
Confirm that the smoke extractor fans are operational and not obstructed.
Test the system every 3–6 months.
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS:
Keep a log of inspections and maintenance.
Train household members or employees on proper fire extinguisher use.
Ensure fire safety equipment is not obstructed and remains easily accessible.
